What
is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?
Psalm 8:4
In his
Gifford Lectures, Scottish scholar MacNeile Dixon suggested
the image of a fly crawling across one of Raphael's masterpieces
in the Vatican. What can a fly know of such a work? It can feel a
change in texture and perhaps sense the differences in color as it
moves across the painting. But it can never fathom the depths
of the artist, so great is the gulf that is fixed between them.
When David
pondered how an awesome, infinite God could give
attention to a being as seemingly insignificant as man (Psalm 8), he
pondered an even bigger gulf than the one suggested by Professor
Dixon. But the apostle Paul, in his first formal sermon to a group of
Jews in a synagogue, revealed that God does indeed care for man
(Acts 13). Paul traced all of Israel's history and showed how God
had sovereignly shepherded Israel every step of her way so she
might bring to the world the Messiah, Christ the Lord. Even when
Israel complained, God was no less attentive or caring. And
though you are small in His sight, He likewise cares for you.
Yes, God is big
and you are little. But God cares for you so much that
He gave His only begotten Son so that, by believing in Him, you might
have eternal life.
God
loves us not because of who we are but because of who He is.
